With Survivor Series coming to my home town Toronto and the announcement of 3 Traditional Elimination Tag matches featuring male, female and tag team superstars I figured I’d compile a list of my favourite Survivor Series Teams!
#10 The Berzerker, Skinner, Hercules & Col. Mustafa (1991)
In the words of Gorilla Monsoon upon seeing this team, “Look at these beauties.” You have a viking, an alligator hunter, a bully in a bowler hat and an Iraqi militant who is very clearly the Iranian, Iron Sheik. Big Bully Busick was later replaced by Hercules who did nothing to improve this team’s chances. They were eliminated without much effort but I loved all the awful gimmicks in the 90s so this team had to kick off my list!
#9 The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus & Jack Swagger (2009)
In 2009, Team Miz was compiled of five young, promising superstars. I’d say my admiration is more to look back at this team than being a fan at the time. Seven years later we can examine how successful any of them were. The Miz and Sheamus would hold the WWE Championship and Ziggler, Sheamus and Swagger would be World Heavyweight champions. Drew McIntyre never held a major title and his potential was never really tapped into. in 2016, McIntyre is doing well for himself on the independent circuit and the other visible three men never really returned to main event status and remain in the mid card. Swagger who you can’t see continues to be barely featured on WWE programming.
#8 “Ravishing” Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect, & The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers (1989)
The Rude Brood as they were titled consisted of Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect and Raymond and Jacques Rougeau. Four accomplished wrestlers that I would say were very underrated on the WWE roster in 1989. Each man came out to their awesome theme music to kick off this match. The Rougeaus were more comedic at this time and so they were eliminated first and Rude and Piper did nothing to end their rivalry as both were counted out. Mr. Perfect hit the Perfectplex and picked up the victory for his team making him the perfect survivor!
#7 Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Jake Roberts, Jim Duggan & Brutus Beefcake (1987)
Here we have the first team to win a Survivor Series Elimination Tag match. Given that four WWE Hall of Famers were involved it is easy to see why this team won. Beefcake and Duggan would be eliminated but the there’s no surprise that ring generals Roberts, Savage and Steamboat would be the first ever survivors!
#6 Triple H, Shawn Michaels, CM Punk, Jeff & Matt Hardy (2006)
Team DX, I knew you’d come! This team was assembled in 2006 and 10 years later it’s incredible to see where each man is. Triple H is the Godfather of the hot brand NXT. Shawn Michaels has managed to stay retired despite rumours of a return every year. Matt Hardy has taken over the wrestling world with his Broken Matt character. Jeff Hardy never really lost his fanbase. CM Punk participated in his first UFC fight this year and shows no indication of returning to the world of wrestling.
The Wyatt Family & The Shield (2013)
We almost saw this colossal team form at the 2013 Survivor Series. These two dominant factions came face to face in an electric atmosphere in the UK. Eventually they would zone in on their common enemy at the time: CM Punk and Daniel Bryan. As the two teams stalked their prey, help would arrive in the form of the Usos and the Rhodes Brothers. Unfortunately, we got this 12-man tag immediately the next week on RAW rather than in a traditional Survivor Series tag match.
#5 The Rock, Chris Jericho, Undertaker, Kane & The Big Show (2001)
The huddle pictured above is Team WWF getting the best pep talk any traditional Survivor Series Team ever received prior to a match. Team WWF, made up of the Big Show, Kane, Undertaker, Chris Jericho and the Rock were in the match that would shape WWF history as they took on the WCW/ECW Alliance in an elimination tag match where the winning brand would be the surviving brand! The match delivered but it was clear that the WWF was going no where as it’s competition never survives!
#4 Rob Van Dam, Booker T, Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley & Shawn Michaels (2003)
Team Austin was assembled with some of the top talent at the time. In this match, if Team Austin won he would have enhanced power as the RAW GM but if he lost, his career in any fashion would be over in the WWE. Everyone fought gallantly, but as it came down to Michaels and Orton, Batista interfered and power bombed HBK to help Orton pick up the victory. It was an emotional scene as Austin helped up the bloodied Shawn Michaels. This may be the greatest Survivor Series Elimination Tag match and Austin’s team needs to be recognized as one of the best in history!
#3 Rocky Maivia, Marc Mero, The Stalker & Jake “the Snake” Roberts
I’m really only a fan of this team because it was the debut of Rocky Maivia. He has some colorful team members but he was impressive in his debut match by becoming the ultimate survivor in this one. “Here comes the man” said Jim Ross upon seeing Maivia; 20 years later in 2016, The Rock has proven he is the man!
#2 Savio Vega, Henry O. Godwinn, Fatu & the Undertaker (1995)
Team Darkside made up of the Undertaker dawning a phantom of the opera mask, a farmer, a Samoan giving back to his community and tough Puerto Rican but don’t let that fool you as all these men made up the backstage gang known as the Bone Street Krew!
#1 The Ultimate Warrior, Texas Tornado, Legion of Doom (1990)
My favourite team because it has all my childhood favourites! I guess you can say I was a fan of face paint and tassles! My all time favourite the Ultimate Warrior with my favourite tag the Legion of Doom already makes this team amazing. The Texas Tornado was another superstar I got to watch in the tail end of his career and in the few matches I saw of him he quickly became one of my favourites. The Team name Warriors fit all as you had the Legion of Doom otherwise known as the Roadwarriors and the Texas Tornado was formerly known as the Modern Day Warrior and of course the ULTIMATE WARRIOR!
